In partnership with Leadbay & Kwala

Co-authored with experts from Kwala and Leadbay, this article provides a practical method for structuring your call sessions and turning cold calling into a consistent source of qualified appointments.

With inboxes and LinkedIn messages nearing capacity, direct phone outreach often remains the fastest way to establish a personal and engaging connection with a decision-maker.

That’s the paradox of cold calling: the technique that people fear the most remains one of the most effective ways to get your sales pipeline off the ground. While most startups still rely heavily on word of mouth (a valuable channel, but one that’s impossible to control from one month to the next), picking up the phone allows you to take control of your growth.

Building a Targeted and Actionable Prospecting List

Even before picking up the phone, the success of the call depends largely on the quality of the prospecting list. An effective list can’t be put together on the fly and must meet five specific criteria:

  • Strategic alignment: It stems directly from your priority target audience and your current offering.

  • Actionable data: It includes the decision-maker’s exact identity and, ideally, their direct cell phone number. Going through a general switchboard reduces the success rate by two-thirds.

  • Defined scope: A good list has a beginning and an end. Limiting the number of contacts helps you maintain a high level of energy.

  • Regular updates: Your file is a living resource that should be expanded upon every week.

  • Strong conviction: You need to know exactly why you want to work with this company. Without that conviction, the conversation will ring hollow.

To build it, don’t limit yourself to simple CRM exports or purchased databases. To build a high-potential list, diversify your sources. The best lists draw from multiple sources: former colleagues, former clients, your LinkedIn network, etc. Don’t overlook active referrals! When a client or partner offers to put in a good word for you, immediately ask for an introduction or a direct line of contact.

Once the list is compiled, we don't second-guess it. We stay confident and ask ourselves three simple questions before each call: Can I help this person? Do I want to work with this person? What attitude will I adopt toward them?

Develop a storytelling pitch focused on transformation

One of the most common mistakes startups make is listing their product features right from the start. A decision-maker isn't looking for a tool; they're looking to solve a problem or reach a milestone.

To spark interest without trying to make a sale right away, your pitch should focus on a concrete transformation:

  • The initial context: your target's standard starting point.

  • Challenges and obstacles: the recurring difficulties she faces on a daily basis (wasted time, hidden costs, lack of visibility).

  • The target scenario: the tangible result achieved thanks to you (increased revenue, time savings, operational peace of mind).

  • Your role: to use your expertise as a starting point, without trying to oversell your solution right away.

Before you get started, tailor your approach to the person you’re speaking with. For an entrepreneur, for example, check when their company was founded, their business background, and whether they work alone or with partners. This information—which is usually available in just a few minutes on LinkedIn—allows you to highlight the right points, use examples that resonate with your contact, and anticipate their objections before they even voice them.

Master the AIDA framework to guide the conversation

During a cold call, 80% of the impact comes from your body language, tone, and voice. Structuring the call using the AIDA method helps you stay focused on a single goal: securing a meeting.

  • Note: The three-question rule: “Hello, is this Mr. X?”, “This is Y speaking,” “I’m calling to set up a meeting with you.” Keep the sentences in the interrogative form, pause for a moment, and don’t rush.

  • Interest. Now is the time to express the strong conviction you identified when creating your list: why this person in particular, and why now.

  • Desire. You deliver your storytelling pitch without ever challenging your audience.

  • Action. You schedule the appointment directly in the calendar, right over the phone, without putting it off.

Treat cold calling as a recurring practice

Telemarketing isn't an innate skill—it's a sales muscle. To stay on track, you should incorporate three habits into your routine:

  • Feed your lead generation machine: Continuously monitor your target sectors (news, fundraising, team changes).

  • Make your call sessions part of a routine: set aside recurring weekly time slots in your calendar to maintain a consistent rhythm and keep your phone conversations flowing smoothly.

  • Test your pitch: Regularly adjust your opening line and how you address objections based on feedback you receive in the field.

Key Takeaways

  • A qualified list: targeted, comprehensive, up-to-date, and consisting of direct phone numbers.

  • A value-driven pitch: focused on a concrete transformation rather than a list of features.

  • A clear method (AIDA): a structured process designed solely to secure qualified appointments.

  • Consistency: a team activity built into the weekly schedule.
