By 2026, 37% of searches will begin with an AI before users even open Google. A lead generated by an AI engine converts five times more effectively than a lead from traditional search. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is no longer a discipline of the future: itโ€™s a strategy to implement now.

In practical terms, GEO refers to everything a brand can do to appear in the responses from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Claude. And not just in a list of links, but mentioned, recommended, or compared favorably to its competitors.

The good news is that the SEO triangle (technical, content, authority) still holds true. But the priorities have shifted, the requirements are stricter, and the new rules of the game call for a dedicated approach.

1. Become the leading authority in its field

The "one keyword, one page" era is over. Large language models assess your credibility based on the depth of your coverage of a topic, not on the sheer volume of pages produced.

This involves creating thematic clusters (sets of interconnected content that cover a topic from every angle), ensuring strong internal linking between these pieces of content, and adopting a conversational tone: asking questions in headlines, answering them in the following paragraph, and including FAQs on key pages. This question-and-answer format is precisely what LLMs value.

2. Establish brand authority

LLMs cross-reference numerous sources to assess your credibility. A few simple steps are all it takes to strengthen this credibility: credit your content to specific authors, cite your sources, date your updates, and mention any reviews or press coverage.

Off-site authority matters just as much as it does in SEO, but with one key difference: simply having your brand mentioned in a reputable source holds value for LLMs, even without a link. A positive mention in an influential media outlet can boost your visibility in ChatGPT within a few days, whereas SEO often takes several months.

3. Make your website readable by AI bots

ChatGPT gives your page two to three seconds to load. After that, it moves onโ€”probably to a competitor.

Priority checks: page load speed, robots.txt file (make sure youโ€™re not blocking AI bots), schema.org structured data, and a clean internal linking structure without duplicate content. And if you have guides or resources in PDF format: convert them to HTML pages. PDFs can technically be indexed, but thereโ€™s still a high risk that theyโ€™ll be ignored.

4. Identify and leverage the right authoritative sources

To generate its response, an LLM doesnโ€™t just visit your website. It consults an ecosystem of sources: media outlets, comparison sites, forums, YouTube videos, and Reddit threads. Being mentioned in these sources means you exist in the eyes of the AI.

The task, therefore, is to identify which sources actually influence LLMs in your market (they arenโ€™t always the ones youโ€™d expect: a niche blog thatโ€™s easy to crawl can carry more weight than a major media outlet behind a paywall), and then to focus your PR and content efforts on those specific targets. Trustpilot, Reddit, and YouTube are among the sources most frequently used by ChatGPT.

5. Measure your visibility using the right metrics

This is the most commonly overlooked aspect, yet it is the most critical. Google Analytics does not accurately capture the reality of the userโ€™s location: a user might discover you via ChatGPT, close the app, open Google, and land on your siteโ€”in which case, Google claims credit for the session.

Metrics to track: visibility rate in LLM responses to your strategic queries, average position in the response, semantic analysis of what AI systems say about you (is it aligned with your positioning?), and identification of the pages on your site that are actually accessed by LLMs. At the same time, a simple question in your onboarding formsโ€”โ€œHow did you hear about us?โ€โ€”allows you to start tracking leads originating from AI engines.

Key Takeaways

  • Topics and networking: Become the go-to expert on your subject, with in-depth knowledge.
  • Brand authority: Pay close attention to your editorial voice and off-site mentions.
  • Technical: Make your site accessible to AI bots in under 3 seconds.
  • Sources: Identify the media outlets and platforms that truly influence LLMs in your market.
  • Measurement: Develop specific metrics; standard analytics aren't enough.

Everything you do for GEO benefits your SEO. The reverse isn't always true: since LLMs are more demanding than Google, optimizing for them boosts your overall visibility.
